Checkmate to the Term: Our Epic Chess Party!

What a way to end the term! Last Monday, the Chessington Junior Chess Club threw an end-of-term party that had everything: fierce competition, fun variations, plenty of snacks, and a mountain of prizes.

The goal of the day was simple: celebrate everyone's hard work and love for the game, but with a twist. While we love regular chess, we know that playing the same opening lines week after week can sometimes feel a bit routine. To shake things up and challenge our players to think differently, we dedicated the session to four distinct game modes.

Here is a look at what we played and why.

1. Normal Chess: The Classic Foundation

Before diving into the chaos, we started with a quick round of standard FIDE rules chess. This is our bread and butter. It’s where players develop their strategic thinking, long-term planning, and discipline.

 The Goal: Checkmate the opponent's King while protecting your own.

 Hint: Focus on the opening principles: control the centre, develop your minor pieces (Knights and Bishops) quickly, and castle your King to safety. Don't bring your Queen out too early!

2. Scotch Chess: Escalating Moves!

Next up was our club's unique and thrilling version of progressive chess, which we call Scotch Chess. Instead of taking turns one move at a time, the turn lengths grow longer and longer with every single turn!

 How to Play: The first player makes one move. Then, the second player makes two moves. After that, it scales up: the first player makes three moves, the second player makes four moves, and so on and so on!

 The Reason We Played It: It completely flips traditional strategy on its head and requires incredible forward-thinking. As the turn counts grow higher, players can orchestrate massive, cascading combinations that completely transform the board in a single turn.

 Hint: Stay calm when your opponent has a high number of moves coming your way. Focus on defensive setups, protecting critical squares, and preparing your own massive multi-move counter-attack when your turn to ramp up arrives!

3. King of the Hill: The Race to the Centre

Another massive hit at the party was King of the Hill, a thrilling variant that completely changes how you view the centre of the board.

 How to Play: The game can be won in the usual way by checkmating your opponent, but there is a second and much faster way to win: simply guide your King to any of the four central squares on the board (e4, e5, d4, or d5) and occupy the "hill"!

 The Reason We Played It: We played this variant to teach children the immense power and importance of central control. It forces players to aggressively march their King forward rather than hiding it safely away in the corner.

 Hint: Keep your King protected behind a shield of pawns until the path is clear, then make a daring dash for the centre before your opponent can beat you to the top!

4. Atomic Chess: The Explosive Variant

For our final round, things got... explosive. This is one of our club's favourite variations because it throws standard strategy completely out the window!

 How to Play: The rules are the same, except when you make a capture. When any piece (except a pawn) captures an opposing piece, the captured piece, the capturing piece, AND all surrounding pieces (in an 8-square radius) are removed from the board. The King cannot capture if it would result in its own explosion. The fastest way to win is by blowing up the opponent's King!

 The Reason We Played It: Atomic chess is a masterclass in tactical awareness. It completely changes the value of pieces. Pawns are incredibly powerful because they can capture without exploding themselves. The King, which is usually a passive piece to be protected, becomes an active and dangerous weapon on the front lines. It forces kids to re-evaluate every single move.

The Main Event: Prizes, Medals, and the Cup!

After all the games were played and the dust had settled, it was time for the awards ceremony. Every single child walked away with a prize for their participation, alongside delicious crisps and refreshing drinks to keep energy levels high!

However, we had some special awards to hand out. The atmosphere was electric as the top performers were called up. One by one, they received their shiny medals. Finally, the big moment arrived: the presentation of the coveted winner’s cup.
